On April 30th, the J. Pauley Toyota Race Team will embark on an eight-day road rally known as One Lap of America in support of Autism Speaks! Throughout the 2016 One Lap of America Autism Fundraiser in Fort Smith, AR, dealership owner Ron Pawley and Brandon Shown will be driving a custom 2016 Scion FR-S. The One Lap of America race will take the team more than 2,800 miles across the country, through some of America’s most beautiful landscapes.
Held the first week of May each year, the Tire Rack One Lap of America event is an opportunity for drivers, automotive engineers and driving enthusiasts to put their skills, endurance and determination to the ultimate automotive test. Over the course of eight days, race teams will compete in time trials at some of the most challenging, beautiful and exclusive race tracks in the country.
This incredible race event was inspired by Erwin Baker’s transcontinental adventure in 1933 and dictates that competitors must drive their entries between racing venues throughout the week, for stretches that can span 700 miles or more. Competitors must adhere to the event's two ironclad rules along the way, which state...
This is Gabe, Mr. Pawley's Grandson, and Gabe has Autism. He is the reason Autism Awareness is so near and dear to Mr. Pawley's Heart. In honor of Autism Awareness Month, Gabe's mom wrote this letter to her son. A small window into the heart of a special needs parent:
In support of the Autism Speaks cause, Mr. Pawley has pledged 50 cents for every mile completed throughout the course of the race. Toyota Corporate will match this donation for a total of $1 per mile driven, meaning a total donation of $2,800. If you would like to join in the fight against Autism and help support Autism Speaks, you can pledge one cent per mile completed to the charity - $28 total. Dear Gabe-
It's been 2,920 days...
2,920 days since your diagnosis, since we began this emotional journey...
I remember finding myself in my closet crying, terrified of the unknown, “what the HELL is Autism??” Can I help him,can I love him through this, because my heart was in pieces... I had already failed my 2 year old, because it felt like it was my fault. Believe me it was the toughest day of my young parenting life...
I would tell myself that day, “listen it's the hardest thing you'll EVER undertake, the hardest thing you'll EVER have to manage within your family. But believe me, your cut out, even though the road looks long and dark, you can. It's not your fault, God has picked you…”
I never really felt a higher power until that day, honestly.
Gabe you have brought me into a world I never imagined, one with a set of eyes that makes you see and feel things that some days are immeasurably rewarding, and utterly frustrating... Gabe you have taught me more, about human connection without words, authentic happiness, and my momma heart is full everyday...
And I'd never change you, your uniqueness, you are my real life hero. A super man who didn't ask for this journey, but hot damn you kick Autism's butt every single day your feet hit the floor. Thank you for letting me be alongside, to see the remarkable progress YOU have achieved. You have your own set of hopes and dreams, and gifts that you share on your terms and your time... And thank god I'm here....
You are my insides, you are my inspiration, you are changing the world one day at a time...
I love you with all my momma heart.
